Commissioner Bio

Bob Taft

Governor Robert “Bob” Taft serves as a commissioner on the Afghanistan War Commission. He served as governor of Ohio for two terms from 1999-2007. During his time in office Governor Taft was a champion for the state’s high technology sector and worked to improve Ohio’s education system. Many of the programs implemented by Governor Taft have continued to produce rewards for the Buckeye state long after he left office, such as Taft’s twelve year ten billion dollar school construction and renovation agenda or his Ohio Reads initiative which has delivered more than forty five thousand volunteers to help elementary school children achieve grade level reading standards by the end of the fourth grade. Before his time as governor, Taft served as a member of Ohio’s House of Representatives, as Commissioner of Hamilton County and as Secretary of State of Ohio. Governor Taft’s father and grandfather both served in the United States Senate, and his great-grandfather, William Howard Taft, served as the 27th President of the United States and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. The Governor and First Lady Hope Taft have one daughter, Anna.
